The Pink Hair Problem
The Pink Hair Problem On a recent blog entry, I got a question from a student I thought was interesting: hey matt ive got a question. right now ive got a nose ring and bright black and pink hair. im applying EA to MIT and i was just wondering. for the interviewis that too unprofessional? the nose ring i could always take out but my hair? Thats a good question! Here are some of my thoughts. We want you to be yourself throughout this process, and want to learn about the important things that make you you. As an admissions committee, we desire diversity of all sorts, we dont want everyone to be the same part of what makes MIT exciting is meeting and learning from all sorts of different people. And certainly, if you walk around our campus, youll see plenty of people with dyed hair, piercings of all sorts, bare feet, tattoos We tell both the interviewers and the application readers to be careful not to fall into trap of having a single characteristic override everything else. Its an easy trap to fall into, but we try hard not to let prejudices take over. Do recognize that you may not connect with everyone, but even if you dont connect still do your best to talk about yourself and your interests. That way, the important information will be conveyed in the interview report, and well be able to understand that even though you didnt connect that we can still learn a lot from the interview. And you should be ready to talk about those things that make you different such as, perhaps, a nose ring. (Or, for my friend Alvar 98 PhD 05, a lot more than just a nose ring) This question was so intruiging to me that I put the question out to some of our ECs (Educational Counselors, our alumni interviewers). With the help of Kim, the EC Director, we sent it out to a diverse group of active of ECs, representing different generations and different parts of the country. Despite the diversity of the group, I was interested to see the similarity of answers across the group. Below, I have posted all of the responses I received (none left out) without any editing. Check it out: John 03, MA: I actually received the very same question in person from an applicant when I was working as an EC in the San Diego region. This applicant had multiple piercings (nose and ear) and spiky hair (think Johnny Rotten of the British punk group, The Sex Pistols). I think that applicant sought me out because I was the youngest member of the San Diego EC group. My response to his question was to stress the importance of being himself. I urged him not to change who he was just to feel like he had to impress his interviewer. In fact, I told him that in many ways MIT is trying to weed out those applicants who try to act in a false way during their interview. Additionally, to appear in this manner, the applicant must have had strong feelings. More importantly, I told him that he should be able to articulate why his appearance is different. My last advice to this applicant was to be prepared to be judged should he receive an interviewer that either wasnt familiar with his type of appearance or already had a bias against his type of appearance. Further, I added that as is often the case with one generation trying to understand another generation, outward appearance could heavily weigh on the interviewers impression of the applicant. Art 68, MI: First, I recognize there is a major difference between people I would want to hire and those I think would succeed at MIT. The two sets are different, albeit with a non-empty intersection, and there are many who fit in one set but not the other. I wouldnât want to hire some of the best MIT applicants, since I wouldnât want to be burdened with continually finding exciting and challenging work for them (thereâs hardly enough of that for me!). I would be more likely to notice someone acting very far out of character â" for example, if this applicant were to show up wearing a jacket and tie which were obviously very different from his usual attire â" and consider whether this was a pose intended to mislead me. Some applicants wear jackets and ties just as they regularly do going to church, and I respect that (and feel flattered that they consider the interview that important). Others wear t-shirts and sweats, and I respect that (and feel flattered that they think that I, as a representative of a school they presumably really really really want to go to, would see past the clothing to the person inside). Iâm trying to detect curiosity, intellectual drive, collaboration, innovation â" does hair color add to or detract from that? If the applicant felt comfortable about telling me, I would like to know why he has pink and black hair, since that tells me something that probably is important to him. And if he werenât comfortable about telling me, I would wonder why he was happy to identify himself to his peers that way, but reluctant to explain it to me as a representative of MIT. Lisa 80, CA: That is an interesting question. First, I believe in managing expectations. I tell the applicants before they show up that the interview is casual and a t-shirt and jeans are fine. That might open up an opportunity for an applicant to warn me, ok, youll recognize me by my pink hair. Id be curious to know why the applicant chose to have pink hair, as it might provide insight. If their hair is pink because they are in a theatrical endeavor, I would be impressed with the dedication. If their hair is pink to show team spirit, I would be impressed with their passion. If their hair is pink because they are trying to overcome shyness by causing people to stare at them, I might be impressed with their motivation. If their hair is pink because it is their favorite color, I could understand that too- been there, done that. I find it interesting that this applicant is asking the question. This person has acknowledged that pink hair, in general, does not reflect positively on the person. Again, it begs the quesiton, why pink? That being said, Id be less put off by pink hair than I am by those who show up with unbrushed hair or a nerd joke on their t-shirt. We expect individuals who exude independence and individuality to be applying to MIT. What we dont want to see is immaturity or disrespect. (So dont answer the question, why pink, by saying to piss off my parents.) John 80, MA: I occasionally get interviewees that are unusual in appearance. It does not bother me, but it does draw attention which I suppose is the point. So I would say I am fine with the appearance being whatever, but the more unusualthe more impressions..so the dialog had better be good. That said, nose rings kinda creep me out. I guess that is the point as well The most unusual appearing person to interview with me is studying at MIT now . Arthur â03, CA: No matter how fair the interviewer is, first impressions do make a difference. The interviewer can move past this prejudice in the course of the interview, but if you can remove your nose ring easily, you probably should do that and avoid startling your EC. As for changing your hair color just to impress her/him, I would advise against that. The fact that you are asking this question tells me that you want to be respectful of the interviewer and that you want to take the interview (and be taken) seriously. So make sure the EC knows thatâ"and be forthcoming with a coherent explanation as to why you like to present yourself that way. All in all, being yourself is definitely the way to go! Arthur 61, NY: As you know, there is intense competition in getting into MIT and you should want to put your best foot forward during your interview, since you are, in fact, competing with many other qualified high school students. Thus, you should not want to appear so much out of the mainstream that your interviewer thinks that there is something so unusual about you that it makes a negative impression. We have many different interviewers, each with different experiences and it is hard to predict how flexible or concerned any individual interviewer will be. That being said, as long as the student to be interviewed is clean and neat, I, personally, do not care if the student is wearing a suit or jeans or how they have cut or colored their hair. You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. If a student showed up wearing a nose ring and had wildly colored hair, or was disheveled or punk, I could easily get over it, but would be curious and may consider whether your dress is something that you want me to focus on, as opposed to you. If your intent is to demonstrate how you feel and you want to make a point, then you should be ready to defend your position, if asked. However, I assume that you would rather have the interview focus on who you are, what you are about and your accomplishments. Tom 75, CA: For myself as an interviewer, I might be a bit put off until the interview got underway, but as an interviewer I am focused on substance over form, so if passion and initiative have translated into research or other cool stuff then I am all about that and dont care about form or appearance. But as the interview is about to start there would be a presumption to be overborne, and when applying to an unimaginably competitive school, why would a student want that? Bottom line is that the impression issue depends upon the interviewer, and whether to alter ones appearance to mitigate that risk depends upon the interviewee. If it were me as the student I would dye the hair black and lose the nose ring, but thats me. Kim 86, Director of the Educational Council We talk a lot with ECs about how the interview is an effort to get to know the student as an individual and what is truly important to them. Pink hair can be just one reflection of that very thing. Training for ECs is as much about what not to judge as it is to know on what to have an opinion. First impressions are certainly on the list of what not to judge. While an EC might note that the student stood out in a crowd because of the pink hair, they will probably also admit it made the student easier to find in the crowded coffee shop. I dont believe it would have an affect however on their overall opinion of the applicant. We hope each student will be honest about who they are, even when pink hair is part of that story. That said, if the student is not comfortable in his nose ring he should leave it at home. A college interview is not the best place to try out a new look. Its good to take a position on a subject in an interview but its also important to be prepared to defend that pos itioneven when its personal style choice.

The Formation of American Identity Morgan Hersha IAH 201 Professor Emily Conroy-Krutz February 21, 2013 Americans pride themselves on their nation and its achievements, but most of all, their freedom. ââ¬Å"Nothing is more wonderful than the art of being free, but nothing is harder to learn how to use than freedom. â⬠It is a blessing to live under such a great constitution and we as citizens should be knowledgeable about where, when, and how it all it began. This is the same case for America. The United States has formed its identity through experiences, both good and bad. After a long history of both conflict and peace, the United States formed as a union influenced both by European cultures and Native American culture. It all started when Christopher Columbus set sail and him along with the Europeans colonized to America. The Europeans brought their culture and ideas with them. We Americans just like any culture like to pass on our traditions to the generations to come. The things that I have learned in this class have tied into things today, or at least their origin. The shared history and culture that was developed is still evolving today. During the colonial and revolutionary periods of American history, Native Americans, wars, and European culture all impacted what it meant to be American, and its identity. Native Americans contributed to American identity tremendously. Early American settlers developed many skills that they learned from the Native Americans such as agriculture, language, and even governmental structure. Without the Native Americans it would have been difficult for colonists to be successful and survive. The colonists played a role like a tourist, and the Native Americans acted as guides. Native Americans depended on trade, and they shared this strategy with the colonists. Europeans would send things such as fur in return for things such as guns and salt. The French trading company was set up. It was thought the Native Americans receive civilization and Christianity, while the Europeans receive labor and land. This was obviously extremely unfair and the colonists were highly upset over this. The colonists were practically raised by the Native Americans, but once they were able to stand on their own two feet, they took a stand to the Native Americans due to their frustration. During the colonial times of America, multiple wars took place in order to get rid, or displace the Native Americans. During this time the Native Americans were treated horribly. It was their homeland and it was being taken from them, and some were even taken in as slaves. The colonists started to build on the Connecticut River Valley, but the only thing stopping them was the Pequots. At this time is when the colonists and Native Americans decide to unite against the Pequots, starting the Pequot War in 1637. The English set fire to a fort, which burned down the whole thing leaving about 5 survivors. The English believe that their easy victory meant that God was on their side. The English wanted to adopt the women and children and bring them into their own tribes and convert them into Christianity. The Wampanoag Indians did not want to live by the moral code of the Puritans. Massasoit was chief of the Wampanoag, he then died and Wamsuette took over which is when things began to fall apart. The sudden death of Wamsuetta was believed to be the cause the King Phillips war in 1975-1976, said to be the bloodiest war in history. During this war 5,000 Native people did, and Phillip retreated home. Many people argue over the justification of taking the land of the Native America. ââ¬Å"It was a solemn sight to see so many Christians lying in their blood, some here and some there, like a company of sheep torn by wolves. Some say that the colonists came there to express their religion and gain wealth, while others see the colonists as cruel and unfair people. Today Native Americans, or Indians, have been given reservations, or land in order to repay them for what had been taken from them. There is much controversy on what else the Indians receive, but the United States is putting in some effort to justify what they had done. What is warfare? According to Websterà ¢â¬â¢s Dictionary, warfare is the process of military struggle between two nations or groups of nations. Warfare is a part of just about every nationââ¬â¢s history. What influenced the American Revolution? There were a series of events that impacted the way Americans thought and gave them courage to rebel. The Haitian Revolution put thoughts in the Americans head to become free when the slaves rebelled and took Haiti from the French. By 1770ââ¬â¢s about 1/5 of the British Empire was made up of Americans. The Sugar Act and Stamp Act were both two occurrences that made the colonists extremely angry, and after mass rioting the act was repealed. Britain came up with the Townshend Act, which placed import on glass, paint, paper, lead and tea. To enforce the act the British would use blank search warrants and search any building for any reason. The colonists became very upset and scared. As a result of this there were many outbreaks, which led up to the Boston Massacre. With many civilians being killed during the Boston Massacre, this is when the people start to realize that Americans need to be independent. The Americans start to make homespun clothes and homemade food and tea, which starts to bring patriotism, which makes it easy to put together a military. The French come to aid of the Americans by providing cash to help defeat the British. The American Revolution had major impacts. Examples of these impacts include things such as independent states with a centralized government, decentralized colonies to independent states with a central government, formation of a constitution, and separation of church and state, and the restriction of slavery. This American Revolution plays a very crucial role in who we are as Americans today. The last major impact on American identity is the influence that the British had on the Americans. The United States continues to be dependent on the British for culture and other things showing that America as a nation still followed Britain. Manufacturing has not yet been developed so the Americans are still depending on England to get their goods. America starts to take off when Jedidah Mose, a minister from Connecticut, creates an American geography for classroom use. The Europeans eventually do not have local knowledge about America and start asking for information. Goods start being carried on American ships, which is a symbolic change as a new point in history of the US. America is a land of wonders, in which everything is in constant motion and every change seems an improvement. â⬠The point when Americans are seen as free and equal is when the Empress of China, the first US ship to go to China, sets sail. On that same day a ship leaves from New York to go to London, to pronounce peace terms. These actions are not being done by the government, but by merchants, althou gh the people see it as a national action. Americans can now enjoy buying things on their own terms. Americans continue to judge themselves as British, and the English do not respect them. Americans are very eager to always read British reports that are talking about America, and they are very sensitive to this. Americans need to cut ties with British if they want to have their own identity. Between the dates 1810-1830 America shifts between being dependent on the British, and being independent. Native Americans, warfare, and European culture have all been major factors that formed the American identity, and who we are today. Some of our values and trends may have changed throughout the years, but we still hold onto the roots of our culture. It is a blessing to live with freedom, and sometimes people take that for granted. Racist stereotypes and other peoples schemes confound his attempts to know himself. Here within this quiet greenness I possessed the only identity I had ever known, and I was losing (99). He is subordinate to the white guests out of necessity but exerts his authority brutally over all of the blacks at the school. He will later say, Ive made my place in it and Ill have every Negro in the country hanging on tree limbs by morning if it means staying where I am (143). At a low point, the Invisible Man even thinks, If you made an appointment with one of them white persons you couldnt bring them any slow c.p. (colored peoples) time (163). He feels that he needs to somehow measure up to the white mans society by working on his own habits. Finally, the separation between his social progress and his attempt to stay in touch with himself became so distant, that I realized that I no longer knew my own name (239). 2) An attempt at Social progressThe dream of social progress for black Americans offered by the colleges ideology breeds treachery and division. Dr. Bledsoe betrays the entire community with his surrender to the white nation, and the entire college turns its back on Trueblood. It also gives an implied acceptance of second class status for blacks. This hypocrisy betrays the narrator and the entire Harlem community. Rather than unite various oppressed groups, it divides them. The college hated Trueblood out of fear that the white community would also dismiss him as a disgrace to society. I didnt understand in those pre-invisible days that their hate, and mine too, was charged with fear. We were trying to lift them up and they, like Trueblood, did everything it seemed to pull us down (47). Because blacks were judged as a whole group and not as individuals, the blacks closer to the white man began to hat those that were farther away. They were viewed as impediments to their effort. This dream continues and grows into a desire to move forward, to move to New York. New York! Thats not a place, its a dream. When I was your age it was Chicago. Now all the little black boys run away to New York. Out of the fire and into the melting pot (152). 3) Black v. WhiteThe ideology of the model black citizen is present ever since the Invisible Mans grandfather speaks at his deathbed. Even the college that he attends that its followers shun the heritage of black Southern folk culture. It demands that its followers try not to be too black.
